A hidden gem in the midst of the rocky terrain of Hampi, is the ancient village of Anegundi. Located on the northern banks of Tungabhadra River, about 20kms from the resort, the Anegundi village has a rich past that dates back to almost 5000 years. Legend has it, that this village was the monkey kingdom of Kishkinda as per the Ramayana. Another legend says that the kings of the mighty Vijayanagar Empire used Anegundi as a dock for their elephants, and the name is derived from ‘Aanai’ which means elephant in the native tongue. Punctuated by rocky hills, intermittent greenery, and the Tungabhadra river, this village harbours ancient temples and remarkable stone sculptures.
